The Best Cheese Toastie Maker: Machines That Melt Without Leaking

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

The best cheese toastie maker is a sealed, deep fill sandwich toaster with around 800–900W of power, because it melts the cheese right through before the bread burns and crimps the edges so the cheese stays inside. The Breville Deep Fill (VST041) is our top pick; the Tower T27013 does nearly the same job for less. Panini presses make great melts on artisan bread but cannot stop cheese escaping.

What makes a machine good at cheese toasties

A cheese toastie is the hardest test for a toastie maker, which is why it is a good one. Three things decide whether you get a molten, sealed centre or a pale toastie with a crust of burnt cheese around the edges.

1. Sealing edges

Molten cheese is runny. If the plates do not cut and crimp the bread firmly at the edges and down the middle, the cheese finds the gap and runs out onto the plates, where it burns and sticks. Look for a pronounced raised ridge around each triangle or square, often sold as "cut and seal". Pressing hard on the lid is not a substitute: the ridge does the work.

2. Plate depth

Deep fill plates leave room for a decent layer of grated cheese without forcing the lid. On shallow plates you have to choose between a thin layer of cheese and a lid that will not latch. Deep plates also leave a small air pocket where cheese can bubble without being squeezed out.

3. Steady, sufficient heat

Cheese needs to reach roughly 60–70°C right through to melt fully, and the bread is between it and the plate. Too little power and the cheese stays partly solid by the time the bread is golden; too fierce and the bread scorches first. Around 800–900W in a two-slice machine with a thermostat that cycles steadily is the sweet spot. Machines around 700W work, but take an extra minute and favour finely grated cheese.

Our picks for cheese toasties

Best for cheese toasties

Breville Deep Fill Sandwich Toaster (VST041)

The VST041 ticks all three boxes. Its deep plates take a generous handful of grated cheddar, the cut-and-seal ridges crimp the bread into two fully closed triangles, and 850W melts the middle in about the time it takes the outside to turn deep golden. It is the machine most recipe writers assume when they quote a three-to-four-minute toastie, and our classic cheese toastie recipe is timed for this style of machine.

  • Excellent seal holds molten cheese
  • Deep plates for generous cheese
  • Even browning
  • Wipe-clean plates
  • Best with standard-size bread

Best budget

Tower T27013 Deep Fill Sandwich Maker

For a cheese toastie on a budget, the T27013's extra-deep moulds and 900W element are exactly what you want. It seals well with standard sliced bread, and the ceramic non-stick coating releases melted cheese easily while it is new. Treat the coating gently and it stays that way for longer.

  • Strong power for the price
  • Extra-deep moulds
  • Ceramic non-stick
  • Lighter build
  • Fixed plates

Easiest cleanup

Breville 3-in-1 Ultimate Snack Maker (VST098)

Even the best seal leaks occasionally, especially with oozy cheeses like mozzarella or brie. The VST098's deep fill cut-and-seal plates perform like Breville's dedicated machines, but when cheese does escape you can unclip the plates and put them in the dishwasher instead of scraping caramelised cheese off fixed plates. Waffle and panini plates come in the box.

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe plates
  • Deep, sealed sandwich plates
  • Spare plates to store
  • Costs more

Best for families

Russell Hobbs 4-Slice Deep Fill Sandwich Maker (24550)

Four sealed, deep portions mean two full cheese toasties per cycle, which matters when everyone wants lunch at once. Give it a full preheat so the outer portions melt as well as the centre ones, and use grated cheese for the most even result.

  • Two toasties at once
  • Deep, sealed portions
  • Bigger footprint
  • Fixed plates

Best for sourdough melts

Sage The Perfect Press (SSG600)

If your ideal cheese toastie is a thick slice of sourdough with mature cheddar and a cheese "skirt" crisping at the edges, a panini press is the better tool. The Perfect Press is a 1500W contact grill with wide plates that take any loaf. It will not seal anything, so cheese will spill a little; that is part of the style. For the difference between the two approaches, see toastie vs grilled cheese.

  • Takes artisan bread
  • Powerful, fast melt
  • No sealing
  • Expensive, fixed plates

How we chose

We do not run lab tests. We judged each machine on the features that decide cheese toastie quality: the depth and shape of the sealing ridge, plate depth, listed power, coating reputation and owner feedback about leaking and sticking. Every pick is sold in the UK at the time of writing. The wider field is in our best toastie maker guide.

Why the melt matters (and how to get it)

The perfect cheese toastie has bread that is crisp and golden and cheese that is fully molten and stretchy. Both need to finish at the same moment. The machine sets the limits, but technique closes the gap:

  • Grate, don't slice. Grated cheese melts faster and more evenly, so the centre catches up with the crust.
  • Pick a good melter. Mature cheddar, red Leicester, gruyère and mozzarella melt well; very aged or crumbly cheeses can turn oily or grainy. Our best cheese for toasties guide explains why.
  • Keep a border. Leave about a centimetre clear around the edges and down the diagonal so the seal can form on bare bread.
  • Butter or mayo on the outside. Either helps browning; mayonnaise browns more evenly. See butter or mayo.
  • Preheat fully. Wait for the ready light. A cold start gives pale bread and half-melted cheese.
  • Rest for a minute. The cheese sets slightly and stops gushing out when you cut it.

Stopping cheese leaks

If cheese leaks from a good machine, it is almost always overfilling, filling too close to the edge, or bread that is too small for the plates. Larger bread, a thinner cheese layer and a clean border fix most cases. Our guide to how to stop toasties leaking covers every cause, and if burnt cheese is now welded on, how to clean a toastie maker and why is my toastie sticking will help.

Signs your current machine is the problem

Before buying a new toastie maker, it is worth checking whether the machine or the method is letting your cheese toasties down. These symptoms usually point to the machine:

  • Cheese sticks even on a fresh, buttered toastie. The non-stick coating is worn. Once it is scratched or dull, no technique fully fixes it, and it is time to replace the machine. Our guide to whether non-stick toastie makers are safe explains what worn coatings mean.
  • The seal never forms, even with a clean border. On older or cheaper machines the cutting ridge can be too shallow, or the hinge has loosened so the plates no longer meet squarely.
  • One side or one corner is always pale. Uneven heating usually means a weak or failing element, or a thermostat that cuts out early. Our toastie maker troubleshooting guide covers the checks.
  • The lid will not latch over a normal filling. Shallow plates. A deep fill machine solves this immediately.

If none of these apply, the fix is almost always in the filling, the bread or the timing, which the tips above and our cheese toastie recipe cover.

FAQs

What is the best cheese for a toastie maker?

Mature cheddar is the classic for flavour and melt. Mixing it with a little mozzarella adds stretch, and red Leicester gives colour. Avoid pre-sliced "cheese singles" if you want real flavour, though they do melt very evenly.

How long does a cheese toastie take in a toastie maker?

Usually around three to four minutes in a preheated 800–900W machine, a little longer in lower-powered or four-slice models. It is ready when the bread is deep golden and steam has mostly stopped. See how long to cook a toastie for every method.

Why does my cheese not melt in the middle?

The bread browned faster than the heat reached the centre. Use grated cheese, a thinner layer, a full preheat and bread that is not too thick. A machine below about 700W makes this more likely.

Can I make a cheese toastie without a toastie maker?

Yes: a frying pan with a weight on top, the grill, an air fryer or the oven all work. Our guide to making a toastie without a toastie maker compares them.
